A Mass of Rebirth
SATB Divisi, Organ, String Quartet | Intermediate | Latin | 19’
“A Mass of Rebirth” is a five-movement piece written by JC Maynard and Ryan Flat. It was first directed by Dr. O’Neil Jones, who commissioned the work to celebrate the installation of the 1959 Layton Organ from Mt. Calvary Lutheran at Westview Church in Boulder, CO. In April 2023, the Renova New Music Ensemble joined with the Westview Church Choir, CU Boulder string quartet, and renowned organist Dr. Nathaniel Gumbs of Yale University to perform “A Mass of Rebirth,” which was met with wide acclaim upon its debut. Using modern harmonic language to set these traditional latin texts, Maynard and Flat provide a fresh take on the liturgical mass.
